ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores memory, transformation, and inner life through a lens of quiet reverence. Drawing from classical forms and botanical symbolism, I create paintings that function as spaces of stillness—places where softness, resilience, and becoming can coexist.   Having been born in South Africa and later immigrating to the United States, my practice is shaped by a sense of in-between-ness: between past and present, origin and arrival, fracture and renewal. The protea appears frequently in my work as a personal and cultural symbol—representing endurance, protection, and the gentle persistence of growth. Rather than depicting transformation as rupture, I approach it as something organic and tender, unfolding in its own time.   Figures in my paintings are often introspective, suspended in moments of quiet awareness. Cracks, blooms, and openings are not treated as damage, but as sites of grace—thresholds where inner truth becomes visible. My use of dreamlike palettes and layered surfaces is intentional, inviting viewers to slow down and encounter the work intuitively rather than analytically.   At its core, my practice is an act of care. I am interested in how innocence can exist alongside complexity—how beauty can remain sincere even after change. Through my work, I hope to offer a sense of refuge and recognition, reminding viewers of the quiet strength that lives within softness, memory, and becoming.
